Protect Yourself
Wire Fraud Warning
Wire fraud is a real and growing threat in real estate. Follow these five tips to keep your funds safe.

5 Tips to Protect Yourself from Wire Fraud
- 1
Examine every email address
Carefully examine the email address from which you receive updates on your transaction from your real estate agent, title closing specialist, or loan officer to verify it is correct. If an email seems suspicious, notify your real estate agent, loan officer, or title closing specialist immediately.
- 2
Call instead of email
Use the phone number on the company's official website or business card. Don't trust the phone number included in a suspicious email.
- 3
Be suspicious of changes
Be suspicious of any requested change to wiring instructions. It's highly unusual for your title company to request last-minute changes to wire instructions.
- 4
Confirm the account before sending
Ask your bank to verify the account information before sending the wire.
- 5
Verify funds immediately
Call your title company to verify the funds have been received.
